I grew up in the rolling farmlands of central Pennsylvania in a                                                                                         place called "Happy Valley." For Christmas in 2014, my now                                                                                         husband Matt gifted me my first camera - a trusty Canon Rebel. I                                                                                 had no real idea how to use a camera so I just went outside and                                                                                   started taking pictures, and it was little surprise that my first                                                                                           subject was nature. My whole life I have been fascinated by                                                                                           nature, and it was easy to find in Happy Valley. I found my own                                                                                     little photography playground across the street from my job, at                                                                                     the Arboretum at Penn State. By the spring I had some practice                                                                                   under my belt, photographing anything that moved, and I was                                                                                     experimenting with shutter speeds while photographing the first spring butterflies. Almost by accident I captured my first image of a hummingbird in flight, and my life changed in an instant. Impossible! I was sure you'd need top shelf professional equipment to photograph a hummingbird - I can still remember my excitement, like I'd captured lightning in a bottle.

 

I began taking my camera with me every day to work to sneak a few photos on my lunch break, or after work before I went home (some of my very favorite photographs I've taken over the years were snapped during my lunch break!). Hummingbirds, the most difficult and elusive of subjects at the Arboretum, became my focus - it became my favorite pass time. I loved it when folks walking through the garden would approach me and my camera to ask what I was photographing, and seeing the look of surprise when I pointed out my subject right under their nose - a hummingbird drinking from hibiscus, a preying mantis eating a bee, a chipmunk destroying an autumn wreath. What started as a hobby - telling a story with a photograph -  had exploded into a passion that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
